  • Unsupervised Learning and Cluster Analysis with CART

    CART in its classification role is an excellent example of "supervised" learning: you cannot start a CART classification analysis without first selecting a target or dependent variable. All partitioning of the data into homogeneous segments is guided by the primary objective of separating the target classes. If the terminal nodes are sufficiently pure in a single target class the analysis will be considered successful even if two or more terminal nodes are very similar on most predictor variables.

  • Random Forests OOB vs. Test Partition Performance

    Random Forests is the unique learning machine that has no need of an explicit test sample because of its use of bootstrap sampling for every tree. This ensures that every tree in the forest is built on about 63% of the available data, leaving the remaining approximately 37% for testing [the OOB (out-of-bag) data].

  • Using LAGS for Time Series-Style Modeling in SPM

    If you wish to run a time series or panel data (time series cross section) style model you will frequently want to use lagged values of variables as predictors.

    Dr. Falk Huettmann, a wildlife ecologist and professor at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, is giving an oral presentation at the US Regional Associations of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (US-IALE) 2013 Annual Symposium in Austin, Texas where he will share how data mining has assisted his findings in a presentation titled "Status of Landscapes and Ecology at the Three Poles (Arctic, Antarctic and Hindu Kush-Himalaya): Towards Strategic Conservation Planning Based on a Global Review and Assessment." The presentation will take place on Wednesday, April 17 at 1 p.m.

    SAN FRANCISCO, March 28, 2013 -- An exciting and informative new workshop titled "Supercharging Prediction: Hands-On with Ensemble Models" will be incorporated into the conference program for Predictive Analytics World (PAW) in San Francisco on Wednesday, April 17, 2013.

    Dean Abbott, president of Abbott Analytics, will instruct this course which is sponsored by Salford Systems. The key concepts covered during this workshop can be applied to many predictive analytics projects regardless of the software employed. During this workshop's hands-on experience, Salford System's SPM suite will be used. The SPM software suite is a state-of-the art software package known for its capabilities in building model ensembles. A license will be made available to participants for use on that day (included with workshop registration).
