Data Mining Helps The Strategic Conservation Planning At The Three Poles (Arctic, Antarctic and Hindu Kush-Himalaya)
Dr. Falk Huettmann, a wildlife ecologist and professor at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, is giving an oral presentation at the US Regional Associations of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (US-IALE) 2013 Annual Symposium in Austin, Texas where he will share how data mining has assisted his findings in a presentation titled "Status of Landscapes and Ecology at the Three Poles (Arctic, Antarctic and Hindu Kush-Himalaya): Towards Strategic Conservation Planning Based on a Global Review and Assessment." The presentation will take place on Wednesday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
Abstract: The three poles contain most ice and snow in the world. They are the climate chambers of the earth, but still poorly considered and for their ecological services, biodiversity, landscape interactions and cultural settings. Based on Huettmann (2012) here I present a first coherent overview and assessment of the three poles, their assembled GIS data, landscapes, biodiversity, ecological service and climate outlook. Each polar landscape gets summarized for its commonalities, uniqueness and environmental geopolitical role (past and future using IPCC scenarios). The role of watersheds, and atmospheric pollution (e.g. Brown Cloud and Jet Stream Contamination) get discussed specifically. Finally, I present for the three poles a Strategic Conservation Planning hexagon priority map. This analysis is based on a MARXAN model and first publicly available data that take into account the snow and ice affinities of birds (seabirds and pheasants) for a 'global perspective' conservation management.
